The goal of the Internships program is to promote INRIA to the world's best universities as a prestigious organisation providing training-through-research and to attract their brightest students to spend a period with its INRIA project-teams. The programme is aimed at:
It coordinates student selection in order to:
This incentivising program enables the supervision and training-through-research of foreign interns by researchers from the INRIA project-teams. It provides them with financial support for their living expenses in France. These internships at INRIA contribute to the scientific, professional and personal development of interns.
In the case of research projects for Masters or PhD students, a long internship should in principle amount to joint supervision by an INRIA researcher recognised as such by the university of origin.
The Internships program is aimed at foreign students who want to come to France to complete an internship or research project in an INRIA project-team with a view to preparing for:
The duration of internships is:
Students working on an end-of-course project are required to go through the local contacts at partner institutions in order to apply for an internship subject.
A partner institution is a foreign university or research establishment that has formed a partnership relationship with INRIA in training-through-research. This partnership can evolve over time in accordance with collaboration relations between the two partners and, also, the available budget of the program.
INRIA's foreign partner institution appoints a local contact as a dedicated interface for the institution. This contact deals at a local level with all questions relating to the program and, primarily, the selection of internship candidates. The partner institution is responsible for the qualification and study planning of the student (see the list of partner institutions).
The list of partner institutions is not closed; any other partnerships suggested by INRIA researchers or that arise during travel abroad may be added to the list.
From May of year N, the DRI posts the internship support policy and an estimate of the number of financing packages available for year N+1.
All foreign students interested in a residency at INRIA as part of their Masters or PhD must directly contact the manager of the IPT that they want to join, having of course first obtained the approval of their Masters or PhD supervisor.
If the manager accepts the application, he or she sends an allowance request to the DRI. Under this procedure, applications are processed gradually between September and June.
Foreign students enrolled in a jointly supervised or managed PhD are eligible to receive an allowance from the DRI for their stay in France under the Internships program. The DRI can award students an allowance for a stay in France lasting six months per year on average over a three-year period (or on one occasion during one year in the case of a sandwich course). Financing for the allowance will be provided by the DRI and the INRIA project-team.
French supervisors interested in this scheme should send an e-mail to internships@inria.fr. However, they should endeavour first of all to find other sources of financing (with the DRI's assistance if necessary).
This e-mail must be accompanied by the candidate's CV and the conditions governing the financing and conduct of the PhD.
All researchers who take on an intern under the Internships program agree to return a brief information form to the DRI on a template provided. This will be used to ensure monitoring by the partner institutions, the validity of the program and the future of students. Interns also agree to complete a form for the DRI at the end of the internship.
